A Treemendous New Year

It’s a brand new year, and with the change from 2021 to 2022 comes renewed hope and excitement. Despite the turbulence that 2021 brought, I believe that 2022 will be full of bountiful opportunities, and it’s my greatest joy to share them with all of you.
As I get settled into my home and my artwork develops, I’m continuing my involvement in the Missouri art community with a thrilling partnership with a local used bookstore here in Springfield, ABC Bookstore , located at 2109 N Glenstone Ave. November 22nd kicked off my time with them, and if you stop by you’ll find my canvas and laminated bookmarks, and single-note cards. But if you’re looking for a more hands-on experience, you’re in luck–along with the physical items for sale, ABC Books and I will be hosting a make and take bookmark workshop. Scheduled for Saturday, January 22nd from 1:00-2:30 pm. All supplies included. A hands on experience just in time for a sweetheart gift.

Continuing my journey to connect with people around the country, I will also be partnering with a realtor, Carlyn Bedwell with Century 21 based in Nevada and Utah, creating custom Thank You cards and laminated bookmarks to send to her community. These handmade works will feature my trees as well as dogs, and they will be perfect to send to her friends and clients. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to make custom work for a new friend. In addition to personalized work, I will be featuring six works of art at a local
lounge. A beautiful coffee and cocktail establishment named The Mud Lounge this January. Their owner, Nicky Brownstone is a Springfield local and the leading lady behind the sculpture walk downtown. I can’t wait to work together and share my pieces with the Springfield art scene.
While I will no longer be selling my work at Relics Antique Mall, my Etsy and my website are stocked (as always!) with brand new pieces that are perfect for any nature lover. It was the merriest of times…

It’s the most wonderful time of the year: Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, and Happy Holidays everyone! No matter what holiday you celebrate, I think we can all agree that now is the perfect time to take stock of what we have to be grateful for. If you’ve followed along with the twists and turns of my life lately, you might remember my recent move to Missouri. Onto some more exciting news: I’m moving again! I’m hoping to find a new place in Springfield, where I’ll be closer to all the fantastic artistic opportunities downtown. Regardless of where I end up, I’m excited to see where the journey takes me. 

I have to admit that it’s tough to keep up with creating when it feels like half my art is still packed up or living around town in different exhibitions or opportunities. However, I’ve been working on creating some new pieces to share with all of you. You can find brand new holiday art on my Etsy and my website, just in time to order a gift for a loved one! 

As a treat for my local friends, I’ll also have plenty of wintery holiday art for sale at my booth inside of Relics Antique Mall located in Springfield, MO. As autumn leaves fall and leave the trees empty, I’m finding inspiration in everything around me. The landscape in Missouri is so different from my time in Las Vegas, and every corner is full of something new to see.

No matter how you choose to spend your holiday, I hope you find some comfort in The Healing Tree Studio family that we have built together. I plan on spending some of my holiday time volunteering and giving back to the elderly and homeless communities in Springfield. And the Changes continue…

It’s been a while, tree-family, and in the time that we’ve been apart I’ve been settling into my new home It’s easy to forget how huge a move can feel when you’ve lived in one place for so long–and while I loved my time in Las Vegas, Springfield, Missouri has become a beautiful place for my roots to grow. I’ve spent time exploring the new rural landscape. It’s easy to get around, with beautiful views and little traffic, and the art and culture don’t end! There is always something accessible and exciting going on, just waiting to be discovered. 

You might remember my booth inside of Relics Antique Mall located in Springfield, MO from when I first moved this summer. Moving forward with some more exciting news! I will be finishing an exhibit at The Coffee Ethic, located here in downtown Springfield at 124 Park Central Square. I entered two of my artworks into their second annual art-walk contest, and won third place with a piece titled “Tree Of Knowledge.” It’s been incredible to connect with the local community here while celebrating the artwork that I love.

Continuing my fine artwork, I will be exhibiting as an active member of Fresh Gallery. I have been selected from a juried panel to be a part of this great opportunity at 401 N Boonville, Springfield, MO. But the fun doesn’t stop there–one more place I hope to show my work is a downtown Springfield bar called Mud Lounge, located at 321 E Walnut St. I hope to share my work with both of these local spots in mid-November. 

While I’m still creating in the studio, I am also working a full-time job and getting used to my new home. So as I build my portfolio and take the time that I need to create artwork that I feel proud of, I hope that you’ll join me on this ever-changing journey. I’m so thankful to The Springfield Regional Arts Council and The Coffee Ethic for the opportunities they’ve provided, and I can’t wait to see what other exciting paths Springfield will open up for me. New Life, New City

Some might claim life to be the ultimate journey. Welcome back, tree-friends, to this chapter of my expedition toward a place to call my own. If you’ve kept up with my travels in the past, you might remember that I just recently moved away from where I spent the last twenty years of my life, Las Vegas, to my new home—Fordland, Missouri.

My journey began in the early morning of August 5^th. As I started my long drive, my stops included cities like Gallup, Albuquerque, Amarillo, Oklahoma City, and Tulsa. But the point of this journey wasn’t to see more of the same. I wanted brand new views and sources of inspiration, so I powered through the desert landscape of Arizona and into the lush states of New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma. I stayed the night in Albuquerque and Oklahoma City to catch up on some rest and savor my time in both cities.

I arrived in Fordland on Saturday, the 7^th, at about 6 pm. Have you ever sat down for a long road trip, just the passing sights in mind and the wheel warm beneath your hands? It’s a magical sensation, a moment suspended in time where anything can happen. My intention for this trip was to just enjoy the sights and experience whatever I could. Part of me just wanted to get to Missouri, and the rest of me wanted to take as long as I could, relishing in the freedom of the road.

I was like a child on their first trip, I had the windows down and enjoyed the wind with no expectations for the world, just the simple pleasure of traveling. My favorite places were Santa Rosa, New Mexico, and Oklahoma City. I stopped at an original diner called the Silver Moon at the edge of Santa Rosa, located on Route 66 and serving delicious meals since 1959. I also visited the Memorial site in Oklahoma City and had a fantastic brunch downtown at Kitchen 324.

I have been in Missouri for almost 4 weeks now—though I’ve been settling into my Missouri life, I’m still learning the ins and outs of this new home, using my GPS to get to Springfield and learn the roads. Fordland is about 20 minutes from Springfield by hi-way, but I love the contrast of living in a rural area of about 800 people and being so close to a very progressive and vibrant city. The drive is always worth it! Getting settled into the arts community takes a bit of time but I have found a perfect starting point: The Springfield Arts Council, the hub for all things in the arts, including visual, dance, theater, symphony, and much more.

In a serendipitous moment, I’ve found the perfect spot inside of Relic’s Antiques and Collectibles for my physical location for The Healing Tree Studio. 2015 W. Battlefield Rd, Springfield, MO Booth #R-10. The location is warm and friendly with a diverse array of customers. Now I have the joy of directing anyone to this location, and I can focus on other venues for my artwork.

Moving is difficult. It’s a transition that shifts all aspects of life, and requires huge mental adjustment. But I have no regrets about my move—I love it here. The arts seem to be a large part of this city, and they certainly aren’t going anywhere. It’s perfect for me and I believe I can call this home. I hope you’ll settle with me in this beautiful new space, where creativity and growth can thrive. Until next time! 

Still here…just not there

It’s been a while, everyone. As the world changes around us, with muggy heat giving way to dry sun and flowering plants blooming into emerald greenery, my life is also rapidly changing–all for the good! I have to begin by saying that it’s so great to share with all of you again, and I’m sorry for my absence. I have some exciting announcements and updates as I enter this new phase of my life, filled with positive energy and hope for the future. 

My first and maybe most thrilling announcement for all of you Healing Tree Studio friends: my Etsy shop will reopen on the first of September! And if you’ve kept up with my previous posts, you might know that I’m moving away from Las Vegas to a small town called Fordland, Missouri. I’m driving along the journey in a used cargo van, ready to embrace a new adventure and take my time enjoying the landscape along the way.

Before saying goodbye to my desert home, I had to spend some time celebrating with the people I care about and soaking in some Vegas sun. These past few weeks were alive with wonderful connections; I saw people I lost contact with, and together we shared in celebratory events such as the new Meow Wolf, AREA15. We found ourselves in awe of the mega-complex full of interactive and immersive experiences like the art-installation Omega Mart. The fun continued during a shuffleboard night with some old friends at a local bar, as well as a combination birthday and “leaving Las Vegas” celebration. A small group of us played games and took photos in my van to make some lasting memories. I even took a tour bus to the Grand Canyon, and met some great people! As a local, I decided to do a tour for my birthday where I was picked up at Bally’s Hotel, where myself and a full bus of tourists were on our way. It was a two and a half-hour drive, with about three and a half-hours of viewing from two different spots and then back to Vegas. Finally, I was able to visit Utah again at my friend Bethany’s cabin. It was another fantastic trip spent relaxing and doing some drawing with Bethany.

As you’re reading this post, I’ve left Vegas and I’m already traversing through the Midwest and Southern states. I have decided to explore as much as the southern towns and cities as possible, and I’m stopping at any art galleries, and shops that catch my eye. My planned stops include Gallup and Albuquerque, New Mexico and Amarillo, Texas. Then I plan to visit Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Oklahoma. 

At last, my new home awaits about 40 minutes from the Springfield, Missouri area. Once I arrive and settle in, I will set up shop and have a physical location inside an Antique and Artists’ Mall named Relic’s Antiques located in Springfield, Mo. You can stop by and visit me at 205 W. Battlefield, Springfield, Mo. On another exciting note, I want to share that I’ll be creating a different website for some new and alternative artwork under the name Jeffrey Locke Artist. These works will branch off from my traditional tree-based work and enter a more abstract atmosphere. In the coming months, I will have a website presence and some gallery displays for this brand new work. 

This summer has been one for the books, spent wrapping things up with friends and my business and saying goodbye after 28 years of being in the desert. But farewells don’t have to be sad–I’m bringing my beautiful memories along the way as I move toward change and joy. 

It’s time to be among nature, tree-friends. I hope you’ll take this journey with me.  

Leaving Las Vegas-for a day

Summer is almost here, and with it comes an air of spontaneity! I find that there is nothing like a spur of the moment day trip to brighten your spirits and gain some much-needed inspiration.

There’s an oasis less than an hour from the Las Vegas city center, where lush trees cover the sides of soaring mountains and crystalline water reflects the warm sun. I’m fortunate enough to live a stone’s throw from this beauty, and I try to take a trip to Mount Charleston at least twice a year. The valley of the Spring Mountains is perfect for biking, hiking, some rock climbing, and camping. During the snowy months, you can ski at Lee Canyon down powdery slopes of brilliant white.

Each time, I’m enchanted by the mini hikes and the views. I’ve been there several times since I arrived in Las Vegas in 1993, and have since made it a tradition to stop at the Hotel first to see what changes have occurred. I always walk around the property and enjoy the sights, watching the high peaks and cedar trees as they reach toward the sky. 

Along with the views, there is a large outdoor patio seating area and a small bridge walkway to the front entrance. I have spent a lot of time just at the outside entrance, where a small and tranquil pond houses many birds and ducks. Inside the hotel is a large round lobby; to the left is the snack shop, stairs to other floors, restrooms, and the bar around the corner. After that comes the registration desk, and the restaurant entrance opens for lunch or dinner during the summer. Then the grand fireplace, where a cozy fire burns all year. 

The grand tour finishes as you return back to the entrance. You’re greeted by a taxidermy standing bear to remind you that you’re not in Vegas! Here you are surrounded by wood, varying taxidermy, and intricate antler chandeliers. In the middle of all of it is seating for anyone. The space is open to the public, to view, relax, or kick back and watch one of the large screen TVs.

About 20 minutes up the road is the lodge. It’s open 24 hours a day, serving unique food and drinks. I was told years ago they were known for their famous Mt. Charleston coffee, and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. They serve over 12 different coffee drinks–all with alcohol and all delicious! With the lodge perched on the mountainside, you can walk around and explore most of it or sit down to enjoy your coffee. I always sit outside to soak up the full experience. 

After the lodge, I usually drive up the mountain and find a place to pull over and go for a moderate hike. Regardless of where you decide to stop off, the view is spectacular. As you eventually descend the mountain, your path can branch off into residential areas–like small cul-de-sacs or steep driveways–that are often private dead ends. Or for further exploration, you can head over to Lee Canyon, which is about 20 minutes to the north. It is open to the public all year. It’s packed during ski season, but it seems to be all yours in the vibrant summer. Lastly, you can head back to the desert mirage known as Las Vegas.

I am fucosed

How do you find your focus? Do you center yourself through meditation, manifestation, or wishing thinking? Do you outline your goals to make them achievable actions? What allows you to pinpoint your thinking, and keep track of your conscious mind? 

Recently, I came across a post on social media about being focused. It stated, “Your life becomes what you focus on.” Seems simple enough, right? But I feel that there is more to it–that finding what we focus on requires deeply personal understanding and connection. As I considered my own approach to finding focus, I realized that my morning routine was how I began the day. This meant centering myself with my thoughts and my focus. I became more aware of what my first thought was and how to change it, if I felt that I needed to. 

This realization meant that in order to feel more focused overall, I had to start with becoming aware of what I was focusing on throughout my day. In the process, I have become more conscious of repetitive and intrusive thoughts that distract my focus.  Creating a morning focus journal has been a valuable step in my process. I’ve made it my goal to use this throughout the day, writing down what I’m focusing on to keep track of my thoughts. This way I’ll have a handmade reminder and training manual to keep me focused on the moment at hand, and most importantly, what I want to create.

It’s possible that I’m over-simplifying this process–there are endless avenues to explore as we seek the best way to center our minds. But in a time of restlessness and unease, I find it beneficial to clear my head and balance my inner thoughts. Focus is all about understanding what we do and don’t desire. Once you are aware of what you seek from the world and what you want to avoid, it will be much easier to focus on the goals laid out in front of you.

Some people may disagree with this thought process and say that it’s the same thing–that there is no need to examine what you do and don’t want, because you are saying what you’d like to avoid by writing it down. In this case, maybe your focus is fractured by non-specific thoughts: “I don’t not want a black car” vs “I want a white car”. I have witnessed this in too many cases. Back when I was a hair stylist, I’d ask my clients what they were looking for, and 9 out 10 times my client would start with “I don’t want…” The same process happened during my brief time as a Realtor: buyers were so caught up in the thoughts that brought them no joy. By beginning with a negative outlook on our goals and listing the things that displease us, we’re avoiding the key idea behind centering our focus. It’s important to put the energy out into the world that you’d like to receive. 

So let’s shed the negativity intertwined with our desires by writing these thoughts down and manifesting. Today, my words to my journal are: “I want to be focused.” Tell the world what you need, and positive energy will answer. 

My personal focus has manifested in wonderful new art prints, with three new prints created from acrylic abstracts. I’ve imbued these pieces with positivity and added some inspirational quotes to each one. The first features a line from Maya Angelou against a lovely green scene with a simple tree and three soaring birds: “You alone are enough. You have nothing to prove to anyone.” The second print is another acrylic abstract with the words, “Without fear you are free.” For the third print with the words “Today I am grateful for…”, I used a palette knife to create a colorful surface with soft flowers of green and yellow. All three of these pieces are available as 8 x 10 in. prints, pre-matted and backed with a 4-ply hardboard. They’re sealed in a cellophane sleeve for protection and available now on my Etsy and my website!

A Time For Celebrations

If you haven’t already noticed, spring is a time of celebration. With a very Happy Earth Day happening on April 22nd, there is so much to treasure about the natural world and our place among it. From its humble beginnings in 1970 to what has become a global celebration of over 1 billion people and 193 countries, Earth Day is the perfect reminder that we are here to nurture our environment to the best of our ability. 

On this celebratory note, I also want to wish you a Happy Arbor Day, an annual holiday happening on the last Friday of April! Depending on your region, some might celebrate in November and some in May, but the same message is always there regardless of timing: Arbor Day was created to encourage people to plant trees, and in the Healing Tree Studio community that is an invaluable sentiment. 

Of course, we can’t forget about Mother’s Day, a celebration of our dear mothers who, like our bountiful earth, give us life. This year we have dedicated May 9th to share thanks with those who raised us while allowing them guilty pleasures, peace, and relaxation. My mother’s birthday was April 26th. Although Marilyn passed away in 1992, I want to wish her the happiest birthday. Thank you for this gift of life to which I am eternally grateful. 

I’ve been busy making new work to share with all of you, available now on both sites. I would like to say a warm thank you to everyone who attended the First Annual Art in The Park. While this was my first attempt at an outdoor event, it won’t be my last; just being outside with others was a rejuvenating experience! It was organized by the city of Las Vegas and coincided with a ribbon-cutting of a playground adjacent, where more than 50 vendors of artists, music, and food, drink filled the area. The next one will come in October, so mark your calendars and get ready to come together again!

The incredible Dr. SunWolf once said, “The paradox of gifts: I know what I have given you. I do not know what you have received.” Today I give you the gift of celebration; take some time to think about all the reasons you have to spread joy, tree-friends!  

Friendships and Trees

The world around us holds a web of connection, each of us tied together in ways we might never notice as we go about the steady pace of our daily lives. But if you take the time to look closer and reach out to those around you, you’d be surprised to see how many people there are in your community who appreciate the wide and beautiful universe like you do. 

I found one of these unseen connections just down the street from me in my friend Bethany. Our friendship began over Facebook where I shared my artwork in a group called I LOVE TREES; there we connected over art and nature, and Bethany purchased one of my pieces. Online conversations led to our first meeting at a coffee shop, where we shared our love for trees and creativity. I was happy to find a kindred spirit in Bethany and she was eager to support my art and improve her own technique. Over time, we’ve created together, building on her technique and sharing a deep love for nature in our work. 

This connection manifested as a weekend getaway for the two of us and Bethany’s partner to their cabin in Utah, just a few hours outside of Vegas. Here, we were surrounded by other distant cabins but isolated in the middle of nature, where vivid light outlined the mountains, backed the lush trees, and sparkled against the water. Our days there were endlessly inspiring.

Back in the studio, I’m doing some new artwork for 8 x 10 prints, ready for framing. The new artwork will feature trees in a new myriad of colors with some including leaf details and printed quotes. Printed on 110 lb cardstock, these pieces will have a backing and be sealed in a plastic sleeve, prepared to arrive safely in your hands and look stunning on your walls.

There are only two days left until the live art fair happening on April 17th that I’ll be participating in, located at Bruce Trent Park (8851 Vegas Dr. Las Vegas, NV 89128). The fair is open from 10am to 4pm, so stop by and check it out for some gorgeous handmade artwork!

In the words of Shakespeare, “One touch of nature makes the whole world kin.” I believe in this idea; that together, connected by our invisible threads of thought and surrounded by the commonality of nature, we each have something special that becomes more beautiful when shared.

Better Late Than Never

No more fooling around, everyone–the flowers are blooming, the birds are singing, and the breezes are warm and refreshing! I’m leaning into brighter days and admiring the growth all around me. Now is the perfect time to make peace with change and embrace what the universe has in store for you, as green shoots push past the dirt and the sun warms overhead. Take time to ponder; what’s something great that spring holds for you?

Maybe it holds an opportunity to get back out into the world. For my Las Vegas locals, there is a live art fair happening on April 17th that I’ll be participating in, located at Bruce Trent Park (8851 Vegas Dr. Las Vegas, NV 89128). The fair is open from 10am to 4pm, so it’s the perfect time to get out of the house and be surrounded by art and nature with over 50 different participants. I’d love to see you there!
